Why Are We Doing this?
The aim of this website is to give our class an online space to share our learning journey. The children already know a great deal and we decided that a class blog would be a great place to share it with each other. This will be empowering for the kids as they get to be teachers for their peers. Being online means that children can be sharing at school and from home. This gives them more opportunity to share their knowledge for real purposes. At the moment we are not sharing new information we learn – that will come later – this is just a place for the knowledge the children already have.
I really want the children to see this as an authentic and meaningful literacy experience, so I will not be correcting their posts for spelling or grammar. The focus is on them sharing meaning. Obviously we have talked about the need for others to understand what we have written, but I would like all children to be able to participate, and not to be put off because they're worried someone might point out missing punctuation or spelling mistakes. The children know what to do and should be able to write their posts independently. Of course you are more than welcome to support them in this, but we ask that you allow them to remain in control of what is written so that this remains an authentic student experience.
We talked in class about the sort of things we should be posting and the children know that this is not a place for silliness. I have to approve each post before it appears on the website, so they know that they are expected to be sensible with what they write. Children are able to comment on each others posts, and we have talked about ways to respectfully disagree when someone write something we think is not true.
No personal information or photos will be shared on this site, and it is only accessible to people who have the direct link.
We look forward to watching our blog grow with everything we know, and then we can think about what we want to find out next.
